Good Taste is the Worst Vice

Alaska!

August 5, 2016

I was offline for a while recently – in Alaska!  D’s parents put together a wonderful family trip that I was lucky enough to be a part of.

It felt odd at first to be away from cell service for days at a time, but it didn’t take long to get used to it (and start loving it).  It was hard to come back to the always-on world!

Some highlights from our trip:

  • Went as far north as Fairbanks and as far south as Petersburg, 900 miles as the bald eagle flies
  • Visited the (arguably) farthest western point in the Americas reachable by contiguous road
  • Traveled by plane, boat, train, bus, and taxi
  • Saw sea lions, otters, whales, moose, caribou, seals, black and brown bears, plus hordes of sea birds (Arctic terns, puffins, etc), bald eagles, jellyfish, sea stars, and spawning salmon
  • Ate fresh Dungeness crab, beer battered halibut, kelp pickles, reindeer taiyaki, smoked salmon pizza, and blueberries straight from the bush
  • Hiked on tundra and muskeg, forded rushing streams, kayaked, biked, and flew in a DeHavilland Beaver
Lots more to come.
