Good Taste is the Worst Vice

Lunch at Rough Creek Lodge, Glen Rose TX

September 23, 2012

My mother and stepfather live about an hour southwest of Ft Worth – surrounded by lots of open land, cattle, deer, pecan trees, and golf courses.  There’s not a lot to do, which is fine with me, since I mostly just relax and eat lots of home cooking.

Sometimes, though, it’s nice to have an outing.  One of the most fun – and quintessentially Texan – places nearby is the Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose, situated on an 11,000 acre ranch.

Rough Creek is primarily a hunting lodge and conference center – there’s also horseback riding, fishing, a very nice spa, and all sorts of other activities.  We came for lunch, with a stroll along the lake to follow.

The dining room at Rough Creek is rather grand, with an immense wall of windows looking out over the rolling hills of the ranch.  There’s a sense of rustic luxury as you settle into the oversized leather chairs and open the copper-bound menu.

I had a chicken and roasted corn quesadilla, which seemed a bit more like an empanada, with the warm, cheesy filling encased in a crust.  The spicy tomatillo sauce offset the richness of the chicken and cheese nicely.

Happily, since I really liked it, the same tomatillo sauce appeared with my fish tacos. And I liked the tacos, too – soft, small tortillas topped with grilled catfish, cherry tomatoes, guacamole, and some queso fresco.

For dessert, there was a choice of either peach buckle or chocolate cake sundae; I chose the buckle while everyone else had the sundae.  I think they made the wiser choice, for the buckle was a bit dry and light on fruit.

After we finished eating, we walked down to the lake.  There’s a little boat shed to peek into and a few trees to provide shelter from the Texas sun, making it a nice spot to enjoy a few minutes of fresh air.  But I can never linger long outside in the summer – it’s far too hot.  So soon after, we headed up towards the lodge, and out to the car, and then back along the winding ranch road that took us home.
