Good Taste is the Worst Vice

Malliouhana hotel, Anguilla

May 15, 2016

After seeing the beautifully renovated Malliouhana hotel on our last visit, I really wanted to stay there – and it certainly lived up to expectations.

It’s a lush and lovely property, filled with flowers and leafy palms, overlooking the ocean at the end of Meads Bay.

We chose a garden view room, which I really enjoyed since it was set away from the hustle and bustle of the main hotel building.  It felt quiet and private, and I didn’t miss the ocean (since we get plenty of that on the beach!).

The buildings themselves are vintage 1980s Caribbean chic, but everything has been redone to suit modern tastes.  The decor is soothing and eclectic – though I have to say, the large painting next to the bed is a little nutty if one looks too closely at it.

My only complaint about our room was that the hammock/chaises on the balcony were set on rockers, making it a test of nerves for me to climb on or off without feeling like a cat on a tightrope.

We spent some time at the upper pool, where there are four black-and-white-striped cabanas with nicely cushioned daybeds that are comfy for lounging and reading.  Perfect for me as I always prefer the shade!

Malliouhana has two beaches, the main one on Meads Bay and a more secluded one on the far side of the hotel at Turtle Cove, where we huddled under our umbrella during a surprise downpour.

As is the case everywhere in Anguilla, the people are wonderfully nice at the Malliouhana – friendly and helpful.  It was a pleasure to stay there.

Next time, a little bit about the food…
