Good Taste is the Worst Vice

Night and day at Mango’s, Anguilla

March 20, 2015

One of the wonders of Anguilla is that even after five trips, there are still “new to us” restaurants to try.  Beachfront restaurants with great food and wine, no less!

For example, Mango’s.  Why didn’t we go sooner?

It’s just down the beach from my usual Barnes Bay haunt, so close you could walk in the daytime (I wouldn’t recommend it at night, since there are some rocky areas that would be tricky to navigate in the dark, especially at high tide).

We visited for dinner, and were delighted by the candlelit tables and the open-air setting.  I had a salad of very thinly sliced raw green and yellow squash, then the spicy whole snapper – light and moist and perfectly cooked.  D had the sesame snapper fillet and really enjoyed it.

Everything felt fresh and healthy, with lots of vegetables on the side of the fish, which I appreciated.

The wine deserves special note – we had a 2003 white Hermitage that was dark gold and beautifully aged.  It’s not a wine you see often in Chicago, let alone literally on the beach in Anguilla.

I wanted to see the view in daylight, plus have another bottle of that wine, so we returned for lunch later in our trip.

The lunch menu features sandwiches, salads, burgers, and pizza, plus a few specials.  We shared the mussels special, which was quite good, and a Margarita pizza that was a bit heavy on the cheese for my taste.

The view is unimpeachable, however!  Mango’s is definitely on the list for return visits.

This is the last post (I think!) from our Anguilla trip in December.  Next up, Denver and then Japan…

Ahhhh, Mango's. We love that place, and we usually have our first dinner there on every trip since we stay right next door. Since we travel in low season I've never tried them for lunch, but I love their sesame snapper and the various seafood specials they offer.

Also: I feel like I get a wine education every time I read one of your posts.

We were the only ones there at lunch – the beach and ocean were beautiful! One downside of going when we do in December is that it's always dark at dinner, so lunch is our only chance to enjoy the view. 🙂

Beautiful post, I can envision it all, and your pictures are lovely. Thanks for posting.
Mangos is always our first night, after a long day of travel it is like coming home.

Mango's is where we ended up after Malliouhana turned us away. Like you, we wondered why we hadn't visited sooner! The sunset was amazing and the food fabulous. We'll be writing about our stop there in an upcoming blog post. Hope you check it out!
